"To educate and train business professionals for life-long service in the governance of nonprofit organizations."

What are the goals and objectives of the program?
To develop and cultivate future leaders for life-long service on boards and/or committees of nonprofit organizations through participation in a 10-month course curriculum and nonprofit organization board training experience. Nonprofit board service is expected upon graduation.

Topics are presented by nonprofit governance experts and consultants, text book and other printed materials, group case study work and problem solving, coached nonprofit board experience, fundraising, and community service projects.

What is the time commitment?
8-10 hours per month for about 10 months. This includes a monthly 3-hour classroom seminar.

How did the program start?
Prior to becoming Mayor, Richard Riordan observed a lack of succession in nonprofit board governance. With advisory direction from Coro Southern California, The United Way and the LAJCC, the idea of training a new generation of volunteer leaders took hold. Initial funding for the program was granted early in 1990; staffing was completed by July 1990. The inaugural class of 15 began in November 1990. By June 2008, 36 classes were graduated, producing more than 800 leaders trained in nonprofit board governance.

How do I apply?
Complete an application form and provide two personal references in preparation for an in-person interview. Some qualities that determine admittance to the program include demonstrated leadership ability, commitment to nonprofit community service, and employer support. Participants also become members of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce (LAJCC) with access to its community service programs as well as its member benefits. The actual per-person cost of the program is $2925, although participants are responsible for only $900 tuition. Membership fees for the LAJCC are an additional $75.
